What is SHAKEN/STIR?

Did you know 45 Billion Robocalls were made to American numbers in 2020?

The latest figures show that over 48% of calls received by Americans go unanswered.

Many people have lost trust in the telecoms market and the FCC are looking for ways to improve it.

Therefore, from June 30th 2021 the FCC requires service providers to deploy a SHAKEN/STIR solution.

What does SHAKEN/STIR stand for?

The acronyms (not related to James Bond as I initially thought) are as follows:

STIR: Secure Telephony Identity Revisited.

SHAKEN: Secure Handling of Asserted information using toKENs.

What is the purpose?

STIR/SHAKEN is a framework which is designed to reduce illegal phone number spoofing and fraudulent robo calls.

How does it work?

Using STIR protocols, calls will be assigned a digital signature. This will include information about the calling party and will need to be verified by the terminating provider. If the caller ID is not compliant, calls will be terminated. Most importantly, this will reduce the number of spoofed calls as non-compliant calls without a digital signature are not sent through.

Why is it being introduced?

The aim of STIR/SHAKEN is to restore trust in voice communication within the US. Research suggests that 40% of calls are fraud-related. This is causing people to ignore more and more calls and cause issues to the telecoms market.

Caller ID authentication technology will also allow law enforcement to more readily identify the source of illegal robocalls and reduce their frequency and impact.

What to do if your provider is not validated?

If you suddenly find that your calls are not going through on June the 30th and you are not making illegal calls it could mean your provider is not compliant. Therefore, you will need to find a provider who is verified and allows calls.
